I’m not sure if isopropyl alcohol is safe on plastic combs.

It all depends on the type of plastic: Personally I wouldn’t take any chances and let a plastic comb soak in IPA. Read this: Google Search

According to a few websites selling them they are made of ABS so they are ok for IPA cleaning.

It’s sold in a plastic bottle!

I can see that, some types of plastics are ok others are not. ABS is safe.

I still won’t do it on my Lee Oskar :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

An ultra-sonic cleaner is what I use. For harps with wood combs, I remove the reed plates and clean the comb manually with a soft toothbrush – without toothpaste 8-).

If I am on the road for several days or longer, I always take the few tools needed to remove the covers and reed plates. Then I use the toothbrush, warm water and liquid soap to clean them.

@Carlos1 what do you use in the ultrasonic cleaner I was looking at the on amazon and they are only about £30

So I put my crossover in the polident for a short time and noticed that I am developing a dark tarnish forming on the reed plates. I think I need something stronger to remove that. Thoughts?

I just did my golden melody maker but I did not take it apart. I just put the whole thing in. I am sending it off to Joe Spiers.

I put 2-3 drops of liquid dish washing soap into the warm water. Turn it on for 3 minutes – longer if needed, but 3 minutes cleans well for me. Be sure to rinse with warm water when finished. Blow dry if desired.

These devices are quite inexpensive and have other uses beyond harp cleaning :sunglasses:

I wouldn’t worry about that. Nothing that will disturb the instrument’s sound or life expectancy.

Of course, if you are frequently taking the covers off and showing your friends how glittery and new the reed plates appear, then that is something else …

Thanks Carlos1 looks like I’ll be getting one at the price I’ve seen them at. I can clean my glasses with it too.

For that purpose the device is also unbeatable !!

I use a small amount of vinegar which helps with tarnishing.
