How is this done?

I was about to reply ask @KeroroRinChou they are a Terry MacMillan fan. I know he was a big improviser

After more trial and error, I think I’ve been able to reproduce the rhythm of the “middle part”. It was always like I was playing the correct notes but it was still a “different tune” from the original, which was super-frustrating. I even contemplated reading sheet music (gasp), but luckily it didn’t come down to that:
My solution was to create a song in my head where the words length/intonation matched the original - the lyrics don’t have to make sense, just be easy to remember. After that, when I re-listened to my previous recording I instantly saw what I was doing wrong. And now, finally a version I’m happy with.

EDIT: I noticed I actually had this part correct in one of my early versions, before I could do the multiple mayes, o well, now I can do it consistently though!

It sounds good. I think I could hear you stomping your foot in time with the tune. When the stomping stops it got really fast. Keep stomping and the words thing is a great idea. I do it too if I improvise so i can repeat it from memory. Keep at it!

yess, exactly, I have “speed issues,” in that, I have this bias that fast=good, that if you can complete a task faster or play something quicker that that is better, and while to some extent that is the case, it’s way too easy to use “fastness” as a way to hide the lack of precise rhythm. So yeah, working on that.
