@Southside_Slim Todd and I were talking a little bit about it during my last lesson. I used to use it for covers before making the switch to Reaper.
Kool its a fun place or a serious place whatever ya make of it right? I found it by accident looking for somewhere to play with other folks while teaching myself ive got some pretty bad learning disorders multiple head injuries make it difficult and i cant afford to pay for lessons either much less pay for em and not be able to recall the lesson the next day its in there somewhere swimmin around playing hide n seek comes out when it feels like it yknow but the folks on bl dont mind mostly so playing on other peoples tracks are how ive basicly taught myself and after a while i start to understand what Adam and Jason and others are trying to teach in their free lessons thats the hand im dealt so I keep refinining what ive done im kinda proud what ive been able to do so far it hasnt been easy by any meens Do You still use the Lab?
hehe ive had to stay away from covers because of my learning disabilities mebbe someday ill be able to for now I do my own thing do you still visit the lab?
Not anymore. But it was fun while it lasted.
Kool its still there daang over 5o million bandlabbers now whew thats over 20mil new users since i first signed on whoa
I tried BandLab for a short time but Iām not brave enough or talented enough to share what I play! Its bascially just for me - more an academic exercise learning new things and a self indulgent hobby. I use Ableton Live 11 Intro on my laptop with keyboards and an electronic recorder (the Artinoise re.corder). I cancelled BandLab and I think Iām now banned from having a new account for a while - which is ok
Hi Luke. This is really useful. Crazily enough (Iām a composer for a living), Iāve just been hired for the first time to play harp on one of my own tunes. The publisher requested i play. So now i have to record it well enough for TV.
Iāve bought a bullet mic (shure 520DX). I can try a small amp emulator into my DAW, but i wonder if iād get a better sound buying a small amp and micāing that as you suggest.
In that case, any amp suggestions? Itās a sort of country rock vibe rather than flat out blues. Iāll need to figure out the best mics for the amp too, but thatās more straightforward. Any amp suggestions gratefully received!
I saw someone suggest a VHT special 6. Any experience of recording that?
I installed LMMS (free) and my nux mini amp can apparently be used as a DI for recording so when I get round to it Iām to try to record some things āi might want to listen toā as opposed to pulling my phone out and recording āto see where it sounds right/wrongā
@david7 I donāt think you even need a pedal. You can just record dry and put distortion plugins on it. Decapitator by Soundtoys is wonderful for sculpting distortion. A room reverb, maybe a slap-back delay, and youāll be in business!
But if youāre looking for an excuse to spend money, then I love the LoneWolf Harp Attack pedal.
Hope that helps. Rock on!
Fantastic Luke. Iāve had a fun morning here recording through a bullet, trying distortion, room verbs, slap backs - but actually for the project Iām doing, I may record acoustically actually. Just that bit of top end sizzle feels good and natural.
Out of interest - have you ever tried any of the ultimate series mics by āblowsmeawayā?
I was thinking of getting an ultimate 57 as the bullet is pretty heavy and uncomfortable - and a really grungy sound (which Iāll want sometimes but not all the time).
@david7 Iāve never played the ultimate 57, but Iām sure youād be happy with it, if youāre looking for a clean sound, or perhaps another option I just heard about would be the Suzuki HMH-200. Suzuki HMH-100 Harmonica Condenser Microphone - #4 by Luke
But if youāre just looking at ergonomics, but still want the bullet sound, then Iād HIGHLY recommend the LoneWolf Jason Ricci mic. Thatās what I use for blues gigs.
These look like great options Luke thanks! The Jason Ricci looks particularly interesting.
Some years ago i worked with Brendan Power on a project and he showed me many different options that were really cool.
Iām fascinated at the moment by the overblow boosterā¦

Did you ever get a chance to try this? Iām really tempted by it!
No, I just saw that myself for the first time checking out the Harpsmith site. Iāve got an interview with Ross Garren sometime this week - Iāll ask him about it.
