Singling out notes

Yo, my name is Daniel, anyone any tips on singling out notes to play scales. With the deep relaxed mouth position I seem to keep catching other notes when trying to play single notes on a scale. Any ideas? Cheers maan

When you have the harp in your deep mouth position, pull the left and right sides towards the middle (in other words: transition into a pucker) while keeping the harp in the deep mouth position.

I started to learn on harmonica with verry big holes (Hohner Chrometta 8) and there was no problem with separating notes.

Yo cheers man that works just great, ive just taken my harmonica apart, and one of the reason for my failing was reeds clogged with tobacco. Haha, I shall now definitely keep it in a case.

Yep, that’ll do it! I’m probably way over fastidious about keeping my harps clean. Even after practicing on what ever harp(s) that I use each day I give the cover a wipe down with IPA and then a buff with a microfiber cloth and let them dry overnight before placing them back in a display case that I just happened to have from years ago.

If you lip purse, try leaving your top lip loose while forming a ‘V’ shape with your lower lip. You should be able to get single notes - at least, this is how I play.

Also thanks to all. I’ll try all techniques and see which I get best results with.

Tilting the harmonica can help a lot to get single notes at beginning without sacrificing deep relaxed mouth position.

You’ve seen this?

@philiousg

Don’t play after eating garlic. It is a really hard smell to get out of harmonicas, and kind of weird to play with.

Drop your jaw when you play as this will reduce the size of the hole you draw and blow through.
