What key of harmonica to play over a Dm backing track

Hi @toogdog

Db is the same note as C# and the harp should be just what you want – only the label is confusing you.

Look at Wikipedia article for the C-sharp minor scale and then for D-flat minor scale. These two scales are called “enharmonic equivalents”. Wikipedia also has an article " Enharmonic equivalence" that explains this.

Actually if I’d stopped to think I did know that. Can I say I was having a blonde moment. I think I’ll remove my post. How embarrassing.
Harmonica is not the one in the photo on Amazon. I decided to keep it anyway. Now I’ll try playing it. BUT it doesn’t say MINOR. So I don’t think it’s going to sound right?

UGH so confusing. But not embarrassing @toogdog we’re all trying to wade through the madness together!

Confusing because Hohner labels there minor harps in 2nd position. So your Db Minor will actually play in the key of Ab minor.

I just had this same issue with a Joe Spiers harmonica I ordered a Cm, and it actually plays in the key of Gm.

I think for this tuning it makes so much more sense to LABEL IT IN THE 2ND POSITION KEY since THAT’S THE KEY THAT ACTUALLY PLAYS IN MINOR!!!

Anyways, Lee Oskar is labeled 2nd position so from Rockin’ Rons you’d order a Dbm.

But if you order a Hohner, you’d need to order an F#m in order to be able to play in C#m. Confusing!

If you go for an 1896, just bear in mind they can be a bit tough on the lips!

Ok
Update. Rockin rons don’t ship out of us.
My local music shop is ordering me a Db minor Lee Oscar. They say there are two choices in THIS harmonica! Db natural minor OR Db harmonic minor.

HELP

this is a great item in another post on the site that you put up but I am not confident enough… After watching this I am guessing I want a Db natural minor for this particular tune Glassy Surface?

Yes, you want NATURAL MINOR!! LO Db Natural Minor is correct! :facepunch:t3:

Harmonic MInor îs labeled 1st position cos they play minor in 1st position, and they have a very Eastern sound as I describe / demonstrate here:

I am getting into this minor scale (Also D minor) rabbit hole at the moment and stumbled on this thread. My issue is the song (in the link below) is a low melancholic tune, so if I use a C harmonica I would have to play on the low octave. And looking online (trying to reproduce harmonica riff by hears using Transcribe! is one thing but a guitar riff is out or reach for my limited experience) the intro seems to be based on the following two chords D minor and Bb major 7. And he does seems to play D, F, A at the start. But going for the F and A note on the lower octaves, means going from -1 to -2’’ and -3’’ which is very hard for me to do on tune and on beat.
Should I go for a D minor tune harmonica? If so I might give up, because although I like the song and lyrics, I’m not even sure it would in the end play well on a harmonica and I would have no other use of that harmonica. Or it might be very good practice. What would everyone recommend?

I’m not hearing a guitar riff? Can you provide a timestamp? But to your question, YES, the Natural Minors are great for songs that have the bVI chord (like the turnaround in The Thrill is Gone and Unchain my Heart.)

All of this thread is very interesting. If I ask a dumb question please forgive me. When you think of 3rd position, all of my harps are Eastop diatonic and there are four little circles on the top of the harp, are those the positions you are speaking of? As far as spending money on harps, my wife seems to be fairly supportive as I have had way more expensive pastimes in the past.

@Luke sorry I was not clear and probably using wrong technical words. What I meant by “guitar riff” was the electric guitar with reverb which is playing in that song.
But in general, I can start to be able to find the notes by hear or using Transcribe! once I know the key and it is an harmonica, but trying to find the notes another instrument is playing is next level.
Well note sure I’ll buy a Natural Minor harmonica just for that song. On top of that a Low tune oned would be preferable I think. Sounds like a lot to ask.

Ah! You could kinda play it in 5th position on a Bb harmonica.

Like 2 6 5

And just playing with the notes in this scale: 2 -2 -3 -4 5 6 5 -4 -3 -2 2 -1 1 -1 2

Hope that helps.

Rock on! :sunglasses:

Thank you. I am always very impress by you and all others who can figure out the key of a song, the best position to play on an harmonica and the notes that quickly just by listening.
What do you mean by “like 2 6 5” by the way?

@Mugen those are the first 3 notes of the melody of the guitar riff.

Ah… I’m dumb… My tabs were 2 -3 6 5 at the start, so I got confused.
Anyway I am not sure I will persevere on that one. I’m not expecting to play anything well on day one but as I tried this one, it doesn’t feel like it plays nicely on the harmonica and that song is only going to be as good as you can mimic that darkness in the singing and … my singing is worth than my playing…

You’re not dumb bro. Yeah I agree, it doesn’t sit great on the harmonica. Some tunes are just like that. Rock on! :sunglasses:
