Amps, pedals, and EQ + pedal settings

Hello All,
I recently bought an orange crush 20 RT and a GB 520dx I’m not so new to the harmonica anymore, but I am new to mics and pedals. Now the only pedal I have is a boss blues driver BD-2 , I know a lot of the sound you want is personal preference, but this is my first time running a mic to an amp. I have played bass guitar and guitar so I’m familiar with the amps but would like some advice on where to start as far as settings. Should I max everything out on my amp (well not everything) the volume and then just use my pedal and mic to adjust volume?

This is tricky, as you face a lot more feedback issues with harp than with bass or guitar. I have had the most success with high-ish mic volume (leave some room for turning up for solos), low wireless output, low pedal output, low-ish amp gain (and the EQ controls are volume controls too, so keep them low) and let the amp master volume be the loudness. But pedals vary immensely and some don’t do much until around 75%. And I still have issues with bypass (pedals off) volume being louder than ‘pedals on’ output volume and have to compensate with mic volume. Too many volume controls and any one of them can push you into feedback, sometimes with just the tiniest adjustment. It’s a slow process to get it right!

Hey, thanks a bunch. There is definitely a learning curve for the harmonica and another for learning to play amplified. I appreciate the insight cheers!

@jasonnitz510 Welcome to the forum!!! If you post a video we can give you feedback on how to make it sound better?

Right on Luke, Good idea! Although I am sweatin now, it is going to take me 4 hrs to get a clean 15 sec clip that I like. I didn’t buy all the gear to not be heard, it’s time to suck it up lol .

I got a couple pedals from JHS to run pedals linear instead of in sequence and it’s been fun to play around with. I paired a harp attack lwbc in sequence with a mojo by Harp rod. Next to a Boss blues driver2 it sounds pretty cool. You can hear both sounds on top of each other or I can just turn either side off and have a clean harmonica over a distorted sound or any other combination. @Maka @Luke
