Charlie McCoy "Complete Country Harp" Lesson post on U Tube

I was cleaning a harp and U Tube was on. I noticed Charlie McCoy has a 42 minute post on how he plays the rich notes and several other topics and tips on how he plays single notes so well and how to play quickly and still keep the slop out of the music. It is definitely worth watching. Extremely helpful and great detail given.

Yes amazing vid! It’s been couple of years since I first saw it. I need to go back and watch it again.

@scott4 Sounds like you got some tips from Charlie on how to play the Orange Blossom Special. Can’t wait to hear it.

Its work in progress but his tips on it really helped. I am working on the single note portion first but this one is going to take some time. I can play most lines but not nearly fast enough yet. As a train nerd the whistle portion is not problem. Give me a couple of years. Right now I am trying to learn the long version John Barry wrote for the movie Dances With Wolves. This is no easy riff. I have the theme song down but the entire version is like trying to chew up a rock. Have you played the Yellow Rose Of Texas? It can be a challenge as most of the notes are draws and you have to move all around the harp to play it. All single notes. Looks easier than it is to play I/M/O.

No I haven’t tackled the Yellow Rose of Texas yet, but as you said, I will have to in order to keep my citizenship. Right now I am working on Shenandoah (trying to sound like C McCoy’s version) and Little Brown Island in the Sea (Eilean Beag Donn A’ Chuain).

Post when you record it. I could not open the file you were king enough to send "I Am So Lonesome I Could Cry for some unknown reason. Any idea where I can find the tabs? I have listened to this tune since is was a plumbers helper put water pipe in attics at age 17 for $2.75/hr. I known the rhythm well and lyrics but tabs are what I use on a new tune at the get go.

Here is a pdf of I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry. Let me know if this doesn’t work.

When to rain hit I was playing have You Ever heard the rain and did i ever. just wish I knew what was to follow in the next three hours.

Hi, I grew up in Houston but moved to Fort Worth late 90’s. Love Fort Worth. Glad you like the tab.

What part of Houston I am a west side guy. Dove hunted where the west belt is. Killed time but nothing else. Then out of city limit.

lts of time but nothing else.o

I started in Sharpstown for a couple years (1976-1978) then moved out to Alief area (till 1990). Then moved into town near the Heights (Garden Oaks). Moved out Houston in 1996, finally.

Paroled at last. We left west Houston/Katy in 2018 for Hunt, Tx. I went to R E Lee and knew several Sharpstown people. I grew up in Briar Grove Park. Moved there when it was out of the city limits. A Hohner rep lives near there I spoke with and he was a great guy. Got a bad harp and he overnighted one. Turns out he went to Westbury.

Thanks again for the music. I practiced about three hours and the rhythm is really the challenge on the slow stuff for me. C M added a few notes to the song and were needed. I listened to Shenandoah. It is a beautiful song. Both tunes my look easy but getting the rhythm is the toughest part of any tune I tackled. Once you get it down I look forward to hearing it. Only been playing for a bit less than three years and have decided all tune take time to really play it right. How Charlie McCoy make his harp sound so rich is very impressive. It seems the very best players are 45 or older and started young. I die trying but love every breath till then. he plays everything well and makes it look easy. He started at eight years of age, which gives him a six decade head start on me. I seriously doubt any natural ability I might have will not get me near his level. I don’t worry about it as I could care less about being in a band or anything that requires I adhere to a schedule. I flew in and out of I A H far too many times and it was not the beginning of happy time.

Keep Well and thanks again

Scott
