Yes, both. I hear the words and concentrate on the rhythm. Sometimes I’ve had some of the words wrong all my life and when I look up tabs and lyrics, I find out I’ve been wrong and think “Oh damn, really, is that what he sings” Thats a whole other subject that probably belongs in the humor thread.

Yes I feel it is essential if you are going to play a song that has the timing and small changes in notes. Tabs are a start but once I do not need them I listen to the song many times to clean up what I can. I play several tunes that do not have lyrics but I have to listen to them many times. I am in my journey for less than two years and determined the following.

Practice a tune you like until you can hit the tabs.

Then work on the rhythm until it all starts to really come together.

I listen again to determine what I still need to clean up.

One thing I did not realize when I started is just how hard it is to play a melody as it has been written. practice and listening are the only way I make slow but consistent progress. But this is just my opinion.

It really depends if I’m playing the melody or a solo. Although it’s always good to know the words to a song for the fills.

I think words is a great approach!

If I can hum a tune I can play it. So a good thing to do is learn the song words/melody the words generally inform the melody, if I can play that then this helps in using melody parts to form the solo.
