Greetings from Suffolk UK

Hello all,

At 63, I am a late comer to the harmonica.

I am dyslexic, so reading tab is an issue & as for sheet music, that seems impossible.

However, I do have some success with tab using coloured filters & setting a dark theme on all electronic devices.

Dyslexia also affects short term memory, so not only can I not read tab, I can’t remember it either.

In the 60s & 70s I was put in the dummy group at school, as were most kids like me.

Through adulthood, I have had to work three times as hard as the next person to keep up.

I now spend my working day fixing things other people can’t. (With just a hint of smugness)

Welcome @Gruntfuttock. I also started at 63, I will be 66 next month. I have a bit of dyslexia too, although by your description, probably not as severe as your experience. I try lot to net it worry me. Single notes aren’t much of a problem for me, but double stop and chord tabs tend to merge. I was unable to follow the tabs for the piano man intro, so I just learnt it by ear, but I play it with single notes. No doubt you will have learned some ways to deal with your dyslexia, so please don’t let it stop you.
As for remembering tabs, well, I don’t think anyone remembers them. Once you have learned to play a tune, you won’t be thinking about the tabs you are playing. Welcome to the forum, there are lots of kind and helpful members who can guide you much better than I can.

Gruntfuttock, That ‘dummy group’ was completely wrong; you’re clearly a true go-getter with a talent for solving complex puzzles. Fixing what others can’t is the ultimate comeback!

Huge respect for your creative approach with the color filters. The harmonica is a beautiful instrument that can be played completely by ear. Best of luck and have fun!

Slowly, but surely is fine. It isn’t a race; it isn’t a competition. Just enjoy making music.
