I had a great time yesterday at our usual Blues venues. I played with two different lots of friends first with CC Rider. We did got my mojo working did a bit of Cotton on that one, plus me. And the we went up the road to see my friends Highway 61, I really had a great time ( don’t monitors make a difference when you can hear what your playing) I had a really good laugh with the guys. About 90% of people who spoke to me after said that I’ve actually improved a lot. I think it’s down to this platform which had lit a rocket under my ass
Thank you!
How long have you been playing for @Andy2 ?
Around 30 or so years, give or take. I’ve been trying to put a band together but where I live distorted guitar and Blues Rock, not my cup of tea, I’m going to an open Session in a couple of weeks where hopefully I’ll meet some like minded musicians, I’m into West Coast style Blues.
What bands best represent west coast blues? I’d like to check it out
Wow, there’s such a a lot, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Little Charlie and the Night cats, Rick Estrin and the Night Cats, Rod Piazza and the mighty fliers, King Biscuit, Greg Fingers Taylor, William Clarke, Paul DeLay, there’s quite a few others. They obviously don’t all come from the West Coast it’s just a style Influenced mainly by George Harmonica Smith, ( from Chicago) and continued on by his proteges and admirers a lot of these guys would just call themselves traditional Blues, but there’s a blending of the Jazz/ Blues of T- Bone Walker, Cleanhead Vinson Smokey Smothers and a few others. Fabulous Thunderbirds blended Swamp pop Swamp Blues and Texas Blues ( T- Bone Walker was from Texas he moved to California, later in life) I love their slick sound and feel and the way polish up old music whilst staying true to it, and how their own writing also reflects this love of older music. I could talk forever about this style of music ( how it’s presented guys with cool hair dressed in slick suits) the musicianship the people involved and so on. But in particular the harp playing which is some of the finest you will hear anywhere to the guitar playing which boggles the mind. None of it played distorted all played clean, with influences as diverse as Blues RockaBilly Surf it’s just amazing music
Awesome I will check some of those out. Thanks!
@Andy2 After reading your post I just had to do some searching - here’s a Fabulous Thunderbirds video I found. @davemacinnh skip to the third track if you want to get straight to harmonica.
Damn that was good
King biscuit absolute rips!
Perfect examples of why I love this music.
