Thank you! Just got a trochilus pop too, looks superfun. The lowest melody maker Lee Oskar makes, the C (like a low F), Tried the E and didn’t like it much compared to the regular A I tried (kongsheng, special20, easttop, crossover). I seem to lean towards layouts with the whole major scale available in second position / draw rot for now. Also interested in super bendable layouts, haven’t tried any yet. though (Wilde, PowerBender). Such a vast instrument.
I’ve got a couple of Wilde Tuned power benders, I took awhile to get the bends on the higher notes but I’m there with them now.
Hello everybody! Found my way over here from BassBuzz and recently started the Beginner to Boss course. Got derailed about a week in due to a cold, but I’m back on it and enjoying the course so far.
I’ve got a background with multiple instruments at varying levels of proficiency, starting from piano when I was a kid, through years of violin in school orchestras, to more recent playing around with guitar, bass and banjo. Figure the harmonica would be a little easier to travel with than some of those (although I do have a cute little ukulele bass that might fit in an airline overhead bin), plus it fits the vibe of music I’ve been into recently.
Look forward to learning more and hope to enjoy the community here.
@Squeak - your breathing through your harmonica, you are a PLAYER my friend! WELCOME.
@john3 So cool you came over from BB!!! Yeah man, NOTHING is as portable as a harmonica. It’s the best for being able to play music anytime anywhere. I often play when I’m chasing my kids around the park, or even walking through the grocery store!
Rock on!
Hi,
I turned 15 in 1966, listening to The Stones, Yardbirds, and also discovering The Bluesbreakers, Paul Butterfield, John Hammond, Jr, and The Blues Project. Being from suburban NJ, I made a trip to Grenwich Village and got my first harmonica, A Marine Band 1896 in G, determined to learn to play Mellow Down Easy like Paul Butterfield. I didn’t know about keys! Soon I was buying more harps at Sam Goody in Bergen Mall, and made the breakthrough of getting cross harp, I, IV, V and breathing patterns to support it playing along with Another Man Done Gone by John Mayall. After a year or two I could sit in with local bands and play a bit. After college I moved to Boston and found The Cambridge Harmonica Orchestra, joined, and that was a learning experience from the many excellent players, some pros, like James Montgomery and Annie Raines were members. I am retired now, and want to work on my technique some more.
Hi!
Great to have a professional onboard. Mixed bag here. I’m not really playing great yet bends are my current issue C harp -3" in particular. Biggest tip for this forum is search because lots of stuff lo read. Hope you enjoy the company. Toog
Getting a nice even tone on the 3 draw bends is a lifelong challenge for me too, as are 9 and 10 hole blow bends. I’ll never get that, I fear.
Hi everyone! My name is Paul Headley from the U.S. I have played drums all my life in several successful bands until a health challenge came my way a few years ago. I no longer can haul all that equipment anymore! lol. I started playing acoustic guitar and now do gigs at assisted living , etc. I have two East top Free Blues harmonicas and thought I could pick up enough on free youtube demos but that has not even remotely put anything together for me like just the first few times playing along with Luke. This sight is a blessing and I cannot wait to gig a little with harps in my arsenal!!!
Hi all, I’m Bruce. I spend most of my time in Costa Rica practicing the Guitar until Dec of last year when I enjoured my freting hand. So for now the Guitars are collecting dust. Back around 1980 I purchased a Hohner blues Harp MS C and because of the injory I’m starting a new musical journey
Great that you can swap instruments for your recovery. It seems people with musical experience pick it up quickly. I hope your hand heals so you can do both. Lots of great help and advice here when you need it.
My musical knowledge is limited and my previous experience was in dance with only classical music so the curve is steep but I’m enjoying it immensely. Hope you do too. Toog
I think its really cool that there are folks interested in accurately playing Bob Dylan. It’s accessible, but helps you develop the ear for something that can be performed frequently.
Hi Luke, thank you for your great lessons. I only just started playing the harmonica but I’m enjoying it very much.
I got a 12-hole Farley harmonica for my birthday and I’m wondering if I should use this as 10 holes with 2 extra or should I use it differently?
Wow @LazyLew what a great history you have! Looking forward to hearing more from ya. Welcome to the forum.
@paheadley01 right on Paul! So glad the lessons have helped, and looking forward to how the harp gigs go!
@n189ak Hey Bruce. Injuring my hand in 1998 is what drove me deeper into the harmonica as well! I visited Costa Rica 20 years ago and loved it. Welcome to the forum. God bless you on your new musical journey!
@mamboerma I’m glad the lessons are helping. Welcome to the forum! The 12-hole is probably “solo tuned” I’m guessing, which is different than the tuning of a 10-hole. Solo tuning is like holes 4-7 of a 10-hole harmonica, and it replicates that 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12. Hope that helps! You might wanna start a new thread on that subject to get more input.
I’m Theo Gibb for Gateshead in northeast England. I’m a melodeon player and repairer at theboxplace.co.uk
I have a box of new old stock brass harmonica reeds that I don’t use and I thought some members here would be able to use some. They were included in a quantity of parts that I acquired as job lot that I think originally came from the Hohner depot in Surbiton, London. I’d quite like to advertise them here if that would be ok.
Hello good sir. My name is Tony. I’m a church harmonica player but not that good. I’m seeking help sir. thank you.
Perhaps @Boaz_Kim_Music would be interested?
Hello…My name is Brett. Received a harmonica for Christmas. I’ve always wanted to learn to play. My goal is to be playing in my band at my church.
Greetings…My name is Brett. I’ve always wanted to learn the harmonica. My wife surprised me with a Special 20 for Christmas. My goal is playing harmonica in my church’s worship band.
Hey, William Dorseth here. I Copyrighted the G note! I bent it to 730 mystery note firewall and hit the G# firewall, I bent it upside down. It’s a pp whole note on a 45bpm aprox. Most of these teachers and experts don’t know the full capcity of the instrument.
Hi Brett,
hope you get to play. Special 20 is a great harmonica. My tip for a beginner, dont blow or draw too hard and learn one song before you start the next.
