Introduce Yourself!

Have been playing for 62 years…the best ever way to expand a riff is creating your own motorvation factor…I will explain. (a):Let rhythm be your best friend, (b): start by using a metronome set at the speed you play at. (c): without using the harmonica, just use your tongue to block the air flow as you breath in and out and tap along with your hand on a table at the same timing as your breathing technique…example 2 taps breathing out, 1 breathing in. 1 breathing out. (d): Now reverse. and do 2 in, 1 out, and 1 in. Set a timer for 5 minutes and make your brain consciously see that rythym . (e): Now pick up the harp and incorporate a little bit of the micro-rhythm into your riff , even while you are playing harmonica karaoke if you like. It will take off in any direction you want it to go. (f): Before you know it you will have practiced an hour, and your riff will have expanded. You can develop any rhythm you want in any way you want. (g): Its a brain exercise that helps to think outside the box, so you can incorporate the rhythm into a single stand alone bent note both in or out, up the scales or down the scales, and it opens up a lot of possible adjoining riffs and becomes melodic and you find those missing notes easier the more you can see the reversal on the scales you play can be near perfect. Cheers

Hey guys, (gals)…. New to this forum, but not at all new to the harmonica! I’ve been playing for about 65 years, played in numerous bands around the world (nobody famous), and am currently playing a guitar solo/harmonica combo… good to meet some fellow “harmonicists.

Hi Rusty

Look forward to hearing your words of wisdom. I’ve been playing about 5 years just for fun and not in front of anyone. I still feel like a beginner. Toog

Hi Everyone! Just joining and starting the beginner to boss course! I’m a bass player and music lover. My girlfriend had a harmonica, graped it one day, played a bit and said “why not start learning this instrument and start jamming” . Luke, really love your approach so far. I found it very handy and practical that the lessons are short and to the point. Even if you have half hour available you could log in and rock a lesson or jam with a track! Glad to join you here!

Greetings from Thessaloniki, Greece

Hello!

My name is Paul and I hail from Toronto. I am a guitar player who bought my first harp yesterday after seeing Ronnie Wood and Jimmy Fallon jam out on Fallon’s show.

I picked up a beginner book and am working my way through that.

Cheers!

Hi! I’m Jacob from Sydney, Australia, currently learning the diatonic harmonica to be able to play songs I like from several genres, and the YouTube videos and info on this website have been really helpful and encouraging to learn and know about all the different aspects to this instrument. Definitely considering taking the Beginners to Boss course now.

Hola Amigos! I am Vito, 15 years old now, from New Mexico. I just started learning the harmonica a few days ago after remembering how I was interested in playing when I was 6 or 7 years old (no joke/meme intended), I stumbled here after seeing one of Luke’s beginner lessons (good tutorial for the harmonica by the way). I am excited to continue learning this nifty little instrument that I can take where ever I go.

My name is Tom, and I live in northwestern Poland, in the European Union. I’m currently unemployed and have plenty of free time. I have too much harmonica gear :slightly_smiling_face: , but my main problem is a lack of practice—I can’t seem to get into the habit of playing every day. I’m dealing with some health issues, which affect my practice and my motivation to play.

My main goal is to play jazz on the harmonica (I’m not sure yet which one—chromatic or diatonic; the diatonic is difficult because of the overblow technique, so I’m considering alternative tunings - diminished or augmented). When I was still working (and earning more), I took lessons from Marcin Dyjak, a great teacher and an excellent harmonica player. In my opinion (as a complete beginner), his harmonica playing is incredible. Check out his YouTube channel!

Right now I’m on a tight budget, so I’m teaching myself to play using books, audio, and video materials I bought in the past (but never really got into), as well as the help of the internet and this wonderful forum. I really appreciate @Luke that this forum exists and is open to everyone, since most of the harmonica communities in Poland are moving to Facebook groups :frowning: (which is… annoying, because it’s so easy to lose your Facebook account—I’ve been there myself).

Best to all of you!
