Good Morning from Kansas. I’m going to give this a go again. The last time I tried learning the harmonica was during Covid and it didn’t go well. I’m 75 years old and am ready to try again. I’ve promised myself I’m going to give a minimum of 30 minutes a day and give it my all this time. Wish me luck.
I have a question? I signed up for the course and am doing good with the lessons. I received an email that had a free bonus beginner lesson [Take a walk on the wild side] is this something I should practice in addition to the course lessons or wait till later in the class? I’m having fun with this and feel like I’m improving.
Totally up to you. You’re capable of playing it, it’s for rank beginners. But the skills it addresses are addressed, but more in depth, throughout module 2 of Beginner to Boss. Hope that helps.
How about just 10m a day? That’s enough to see really progress! I like to keep the bar low. You can always play longer if you wanna (and you’l wanna! )
I watched another harp teacher on YT a couple days ago. He said YOU MUST suffer through the “ugly hours” if you wish to improve. And guitar virtuoso Steve Vai stated he’s not a fan of practicing, so on some days he’ll play the same 3 notes a hundred different ways and on other days he might even play on one string for hours.
I never embraced that philosophy. Lot’s of expected negative talk in my mind instead of patience. And I seriously regret being a b!tch, but I also keep in mind nowadays, at 69yo, that some people were born to be musicians: they can sit with their instrument for 10 hours a day year after year. Not everyone has that luxury of time or the inclination to do so. But true musicians make the time because their instrument knowledge means everything to them. I watched a Rory Gallagher interview yesterday. He expressed his mission of wanting to know everything there is to know about guitar, and in doing so, he never made time to appreciate all the applause he was receiving from his audience. He just didn’t care about accolades. It was all about his love affair with the guitar.
Good tip to shoot for 10 minutes practice. And more if you feel up to it. Most important is to play every day, period, so 10 minutes is a great bar to shoot for. Great advice.
