Mellow songs like Sweet Virginia by the Stones

I was doing some different lessons on Harmonica Barge and learned the intro to Sweet Virginia on an A and some little riffs to fill in between the singing. I absolutely love it and love mellow stuff. Anyone know of some other songs, folk/country/rock that are pretty mellow playing that I could learn and mess around with. I’m not looking to slay some guitar solo type playing at this point in the game and have always loved chill stuff. Anyone recommend some songs? Just over 2 months in and I’m obsessed with this instrument.

These tunes are all I play. Take Me Home Country Road and Ghost Riders are a couple I enjoy. The first one is longer but both are good. The Yellow Rose Of Texas and Sound Of Silence are two others that come to mind.

Hickory Wind by the Flying Burrito brothers is a nice song to learn on harp. I used to do it when I had my country rock band, although I played guitar I’d do a little harp in the middle. Lovely song by Gram Parsons one of my song writing heroes

Excellent, thanks. I do happen to have a G harp that I would like to learn a song with. I get that your Heart of Gold posted lesson/tabs are for a C harp, and will thus follow with a C harp. However, how can I find something I can play my G (I’m a beginner)? Doesn’t have to be Blues- I found a tab for CCR’s Run through the Jungle for G harp (2nd pos D) but that’s still a bit beyond me. Any help appreciated!

Don’t worry, @fasteddie !

The great thing about diatonic blues harmonicas is that if you have the tabulature for a song, then you can play it on any keyed harmonica. You will recognize the melody/song, and it will be in whatever key corresponds to your harmonica.

For example: if the Heart of Gold tabs are for a C harmonica played in 2nd position (= key of G) and all that you have is your G harmonica, then you simply use the tabs that you have and the song will be in the key of D (= 2nd position on the G harmonica); or if all you have is a D harmonica then using those same tabs results in Heart of Gold in the key of A (= 2nd position on a D harmonica).

Country Road Take Me Home and Ghost Riders are two I like as the same type of music. I would listen to the U Tube harmonic as its a continuous harp songs with little to no bending. Pick a few you like and go from there. Tabs are provided and you can work on rhythm while learning them.

@fasteddie Welcome to the forum! Yes, as @Carlos1 said, once you learn Heart of Gold from lesson on C harmonica, you can play along with Neil on a G harmonica!!

I second Country Roads. Also most anything from Leonard Cohen.

Also heard a good one coming home on the car radio. “Willie Nelson’s My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys.”
