I’m trying to understand the concept of minor key harmonicas. I’ve read that playing a harmonica in the third position is most amenable to playing songs in minor keys. But if I were to play a harmonica already tuned to a minor key, would it still be necessary to play it in the third position? I’d like to buy a minor key harp, but I don’t know if I have the chops for third position play yet.

No, if you buy a Natural Minor harp, you play it in 2nd position, and it sounds minor. They’re a lot of fun. If it’s not a financial hardship, GO FOR IT!!!

Luke pretty much said it all. Additionally, you can play beautiful minor chords. Oops, I see he mentions that. Also, be aware of which chords being played in the tune are minor and the type of minor.
