New player

Hi everyone
My name is Jason and I’m from the south coast of the UK.
I’m new to music and like the idea of being able to play a harmonica.
After asking around on a couple of fb groups and trying the 3 free lessons I’ve decided to take the plunge with the beginner to boss course.

I started playing the harmonica about 18 months ago and knew nothing about music or playing any musical instrument. You picked a good instrument and you will find the crowd on this site is most helpful. Its one of those hobbies that people don’t care if you are a brain surgeon or work in a MacDonald’s. The common bond is the love for converting air to music and enjoying it. You will read about bending notes, gapping reeds, etc. and any other aspect of playing the harmonica. If you are in the market for a harmonica I would suggest you post a question as to which harmonica to get and where. The only thing I would say about this particular issue is get a nice harmonica in the key of C. I am not a fan of getting a starter as you will soon realize a low end harmonica needs to be replaced by a good one and set up correctly. I love the Hohner crossover with a good plastic comb. There are others but over the long haul you will spend less money to have a great harmonica for as long as you want to play. Are far as getting one there are several players on your side of the pond that can help you find the best deal. The coarse will get you off on the right track and speed up you progress. It will also help you avoid grooving faults like breathing too hard, especially on the higher notes. There are many players that will respond to your post that have forgotten more than I will ever know about music and how to play it. I do it for fun and only fun. Its a great way to entertain yourself on days that are rainy, cold or in my case too hot. Have fun.

Good luck with the journey. You never know where it will take you. You’ll find the people on this forum supportive and knowledgeable. Your lessons will reduce the learning curve. Scott4 provided good advice already about getting decent quality harps, not starters. You want something that stays in tune, doesn’t fall apart, has a nice tone and works within your budget. Everyone here has their favorite harps – ask three people and you’ll get five opinions. Maybe harmonicas-direct (UK) will have some sales. Hope your playing improves exponentially in 2025! Welcome.

Good luck.
And yes, skip over the really cheap harmonicas even (especially) when you’re starting out. You don’t need to spend £60+ on super fancy but the difference between the £10 and £30 harmonica is night and day.

Hey Jason, welcome. I’m another UK player. Beginner to Boss is a great plunge to take … Dive in and enjoy. I’d never played before I did the course but by the time I finished I could play pretty well I think It’s a couple of years on now and I’m still playing, still learning and still using the course as it has loads of resources… Oh yeah, and this forum is also full of good people who’ve been very supportive to me. Welcome and have fun.

Just a thought on harmonicas for new players. Imagine how many kids are introduced to harmonicas (and music) with something like these.
