Next keys

I am early in my harmonica journey but know that I am going to stick with it. I have a Lee Oskar Major C that I purchased for the purpose of completing the beginner to boss course and I’m wondering what keys i should buy next, in order. Also should I stick to Lee Oskar or mix it up?

Thanks for any input.

Hi

If you can afford to do it mix it up. I have never had much joy with cheap harmonicas. I like harmonicas in the key of C. F. A. G. Bb. But this depends entirely on what music you like and what position you play in. I would recommend sticking to C harmonica until something you really want to play means you need a different key.

Nobody can tell you which ones you will like. It’s very personal.

only you can answer that question - rather than thinking “ooh what harp should I get” I’d wait till you find something you want to play that requires a specific key.

Thank you

Thank you

I understand what you are saying about waiting until I come across a song that I really want to play and buy that key. I guess what I’m asking is which are usually ones that experienced players have.

My two daughters have asked me what I want for Christmas. I may suggest to them a couple harmonicas, but I’m not sure which keys I would ask for.

Ok. I would say A. and Bb

I’ve never played a L.O so I can’t comment on them, but Luke recommends them. Even so, I think it’s good to try something different. Choose one of good quality though. My favorite keys are A and Bb. I practice with various keys, but when I’m playing my tunes, Its those two 80% - 90% of the time.

I’ve been playing for less than 2 years. My first purchase was an Eastop in the key of G. I was so pleased with it that I bought 3 more in key of D, E, and C. I bought the extras to try to play with my favorite song recordings.

This is a dangerous moment for you. I was at the same point a few years ago, asking what key to get get next. I bought a G. Now I have 27 assorted harps and I still keep wondering what to get next🤔

I started playing harp at 14 in 1969. My first harp was a Marine Band in C i think. I have played LO extensively an even still have some all in good condition! I can tell you never really like them! #1 they grab onto upper lip hair an don’t let go. That alone use to drive me batshit. I even have about 4 sets of replacement reed plates for them but i will never use them. I use mostly crossovers now have for years

G is a good second key.
