Paranthesis in tabs

Hi, I am in Lukes blues course, playing Neil Young, in the tabs for the song there are parenthesis, what ist the meaning for the playing?

first of all, welcome to us!

It’s been a few months since my course. However, I think that the tabs in brackets can be played, but they don’t have to be. The tabs in the brackets makes the song heavier.
Give it a try and if the brackets are still too difficult to play, come back to it later.
