Progress on Chromatic harp

Hi @Jay1 I’ve been making a fair amount of Progress on Chromatic, I’ve Got scales C D third position G, Second position Bm 11 position. I’ve done this mainly playing along with songs, I admit to playing all the way through them and very much over playing seeing what I can do what works what doesn’t, I’ve also got D and E with the slide in, and not much else ( I think they are sharps, I’m still having a bit of difficulty getting my head around this) I’m mostly using the slide for incidental notes, also trying to perfect the timing on the jab, but still can’t seem to get that. I am really chuffed as I’ve learned Greasy Gravy, by William Clarke ( I’ve also added a few bits of my own) Cry to me, Paul delays version of the Solomon King song, and V8 Ford by Little Charlie and the Night cats. So thus far I’m very pleased. I’m also very surprised at how intuitive the Chromonica is to play, I just get the key the position and off I go, I’ve got an app on my phone that gives me the key of the songs ( I don’t trust Google as it’s given me the wrong advice several times especially on keys) I play the song use the app get the key and give it a go. Still making a few mistakes but, I’m more aware of where I am in a song now, I stumbled on Summertime the other day, whilst tatting about, my tuner say I was playing in A ( so I’m guessing it’s in A Minor) as my tuner doesn’t seem to do Flats Sharps or Minors. But yes indeed very pleased with my progress thus far.

[/quote] Try a touch ahead of where you want the slide note, there’s a time lag between knowing where you want it, pressing the button and achieving the note. From you military training you’ll understand the minuscule time lags between deciding, squeezing the trigger and the bang! Same with the slide, when it happens naturally you compensate for the time lag. Summertime is one of my go-to bits of music. you’re right it was originally in a minor key but according to the English National Opera it’s the most covered song in the world with over 25,000 versions! Have a look at The history of George Gershwin’s Summertime | English National Opera. I’ve also got D and E with the slide in, and not much else ( I think they are sharps, Spot on D# on the draw and E# on the blow. I’m guessing it’s in A Minor, again spot on. Probably took me two years to get as far as you have so really well done. Saw something about needing mics sorted, do you have a recording studio anywhere near you? If so have a chat with the sound engineers or alternatively engineers at a local radio station, they are usually pretty good, anyway worth a try Jay1

I have a friend who owns a studio, I will ask him that’s a great idea, I’ve been trying all day to find parts etc but I’ve had no luck, I’d love to get my tiny collection of vintage mics working. To be fair I bought them off a car boot and they worked great but they stopped. So yeah thanks Jay great Idea. I’ve got a room booked at the Studio for in the New Year, as I want to put what I’m learning through my Silverfish and reverb it seems how it sounds. Thanks for the encouragement I’m really pleased with my progress

Don’t understand? How can a tuner not “do” #'s or b’s? Need some context.

What key is your chromatic. Also is it an 8 - 10 - 12 - 14 - 16 hole?

I don’t know it just names the next nearest note either that of I’m not reading it properly? It’s brand new ( well I say brand new but I’ve had it awhile and forgot about it) and I’ve only just discovered it has a Metronome. I’m not all that good with it as yet
