Recording harmonica

Hi all.
I have been asked to play on a recording session in a local studio. I have been playing for a while but I have no idea how to record! Any tips?

I normally play in a horn section and harmonica is only my second instrument I normally go straight into the desk with the same mic as I use for the sax. But I am thinking this will not be the best way to sound good in the studio!

Should I use an amp and get the tech to record from that? I have a shaker mad cat that I like to use to get cupping effects so could plug that in. or is it better to record acoustically ie like a singer? all thoughts welcome!

Hey @nickcavill I have recorded several times in a studio. Sometimes the engineer/producer has a certain way they like things set up. When I record it’s straight into a regular mic. If you have a certain sound and your amp is set up for, that then you could take it along with your Shaker Mad Cat and see what they say. At least you would be prepared either way. I’m sure others with much more studio time than I will chime in, Hope this helps.

Don’t use the volume control on the mic - the engineer will sort out levels in post-production. I too record with a vocal mic (SM58), but use my Bulletini mic (with volume control) when playing live.

@nickcavill What sound are you going for? Dirty bluesy tone, or clean pristine tone?
