I have bought a Hohner 592 John Lennon signature C harmonica and don’t know what kind of Hohner it compares with. Is it really a harmonica series that stands alone, or is it really another model such as a Marine Band, Special 20, or something else? I am trying to decide if it remains unplayed or if I am going to treat myself to something really special to play and will advance my playing by leaps and bounds. I remain a novice playing single notes clearly and bends elude me (except for the -1).
I’d guess it’s just a marine band dedicated to john lennon. I’m not a fan of hohner signature harps. They are usually just marine bands with different covers. I dislike Hohner because one of the biggest current rock stars, Neil Young has been playing harmonica with far more songs than imaginable and never a harmonica dedicated to him.
The comb is clear abs.
@stonesamj @njchromaticdude Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but to my knowledge all the signature series or one off harps are the MS Series with different covers. I got this from Kinya Pollard (harp smith, harmonica technician). I take it he knows what he’s talking about.
Same as the Progressive Series of Special 20, Rocket, Rocket Amp. All use the same reed plates, same combs for the Rockets just different cover plates for all the Harmonicas. This is my understanding of how Hohner operate.
Hope this helps.
@Dai You are correct. Hohner merely makes a few minor cosmetic changes and markets it as a new item. Just like they did with the Blues Harp (pre-MS) and the Marine Band. Both are identical underneath the covers. When I am restoring harps, I can use any MB parts (reeds, etc) to replace items on a Blues Harp or visa versa. And they claimed that the MS harps were their first modular harps. Lol. They have been modular (in a sense) for years.
Hi stonesamj
I’m not really sure on what “ series “ the signature harps are , but my guess is MS Series . I enjoy myself collecting the “ signatures “ but only what pleases me . ( not interested in Steve Baker or Jean-Jacques )
I’d love to get a Bi-Centennial Hohner Golden Melody ( 1776 - 1976 )
I agree 100% regarding Neil Young . I even wrote to Hohner regarding if perhaps I missed the boat on this . Not even a response . I also find Hohner not to be a “ wow the customer “ type of company . Then again I can say that about Seydel also . I once saw a great polo shirt from Seydel in a photo of the swag shop . I inquired and was told they were not for sale . I wrote back and asked “ then why are they there ?”
They replied “ I’ll need your credit card and size and I’ll send you one “ ….no thank you !
I find most companies have a stick in their butt . Heres the shirt
