Something Different

Tired of lugging a 53lb Bassman, I wanted a smaller vintage style combo amp that everyone else didn’t have. I also had a 1940’s, 17w PA. So finding a speaker cabinet was an option.

After checking online offerings, I decided to design a speaker enclosure. I had Mojotone build a ‘57 Fender Bandmaster 3x10 style cabinet but with an early 50s style “TV Front”. I found “palomino” and chocolate brown tolex, which I had wrapped horizontally like a 50s Gibson or Guild. The grille cloth – a 30s Zenith radio reproduction. The “nameplate”, from a 1957 Buick Roadmaster auto.

The “TV front” reduced the speaker opening, so the 3x10 space became 1x10” and 2x8” (less weight too). A 10” Eminence blue frame alnico, an 8” alnico and an 8” ferro-ceramic (both Weber Chicago Vintage Series – 20-25w). 32lb

I think harmonica players are at a disadvantage when it comes to amps and speakers because most sound tests use guitars. So there was a lot of listening, imagining, and guesswork. The look and sound worked out.

I’m wondering if anyone has gone on a similar adventure and what you came up with.

Wow @BnT she’s a beauty! Big congrats. What a fun journey. I’d love to go on one like that, but have far too few amplified gigs to justify it sadly. Can’t wait to hear how she sounds! Rock on! :sunglasses:
