I’m currently working on Stone Fox Chase (along with the Going Back South riff I mentioned in another thread), using this video as a reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOR0Kej02Xg
I’d really love to get your feedback! I play the beginning part twice in a row because I’m not sure what to play next. It sounds to me like they switch harmonicas at some point — am I right?
If anyone has tabs for the licks they play in the second half of the piece, I’d really appreciate it! Otherwise, I might try to work them out by ear, but I’m not sure which key they’re playing in.
@mauraulucien Bravo! Great start here my friend. Sounds like the riff, so congrats for all your hard work getting it to this point.
As far as improving 2 main points:
1.) All of your -3’ are a bit sharp. They sound released, so play -2 -2 -3 -2 -2" and then try -2 -2 -3’ -2 -2" and then try -2 -2 -3" -2 -2" and really work on finding where is that -3’ exactly?
It’s the hardest of all of the draw bends to play in tune, so this is time well spent!
2.) If you can slow it down and play it with a metronome, or slow down the original recording to like 50% and play along with it that will help you really get the rhythm in the pocket like Charlie McCoy is playing it. A normal person won’t notice, but a musician will hear that you’re kinda just “skating” a bit on the rhythms and not playing them with the rhythmic intensity and accuracy of Charlie.
In the B section, on the -4 try adding a fast hand wah if you want. I did a throat tremolo in the video, but then I saw Charlie play it and realized he was doing a fast hand wah. So that could be a fun thing to experiment with as well.
Again really good work here. I can tell you’ve put a lot of time into this, and you should definitely give yourself a pat on the back! Rock on!
Thanks a lot ! I’ll be working on this. Do you know what he plays in the second part of the song ? I feel like he’s switching to a different key but I’m not sure. I’m trying to get it by ear but I’ve never done it so it’s a bit hard. Any hints ?
Anyway, it’s always great to hear that you like my playing !
