I’m traveling in the Philippines right now and my only options are this super cheap Parrot harmonica from China or a Suzuki MR-300. I know the Suzuki is a specialized model, but would it be better for me even though I’m a total beginner?
I had to check which model this is. If at all possible, I would try to get a standard diatonic harmonica from a good brand.
I did a little research, and the Suzuki model has several holes to enable easy overblows and overdraws, but I couldn’t verify if it can bend. If you are learning, a standard diatonic harmonica is the way to go. Try to get a good one (Lee Oskar and Seydel Session Steels are great)
The other thing with Suzuki is that even though they maks excellent sounding and playing harmonicas, they will NOT honor their warranty if there is an issue without dragging you through it. I know from experience.
@rk.martin6 Hey Ryan - welcome to the forum! Yeah the Suzuki is probably gonna be better than the Chinese cheapy. If it’s not a financial hardship for you, I’d probably recommend the Suzuki.
That helps a ton, thanks guys! My understanding is that if I don’t cover the extra holes, it operates as a standard diatonic harmonica and apparently of high quality. It’s also currently my only option, but I think k will wait, as I think I’ll be moving through a bigger island in ten or so days. Appreciate your help.
