Hi @TC6969

I generally don’t tell them anything and play the harp that I desire (C, F, G, Bb, Eb or D) depending on the song, harp position that I think is best for the song and the mood/feeling that I wish to express.

Sometimes I do say something like, “Thanks, but I think I’ll use my D harp” or “I think 5th position would be better for this song” and leave it at that. I often get looks implying that they have little or no understanding of what I just said, but that is my little private joke – there’s no sense in trying to ignite bad vibes while playing music with someone.

Yeah, I’ll say something along the lines of, well this Lucky 13 can bend on every hole, or this is a rock tuned harp would you prefer that. Then I let my playing do the talking. I admire some of these position players who can get up with a few harps all in different keys and just do the business. but yes, I’ve had that before, I think it’s because they have probably had someone get up who doesn’t know what they are supposed to be playing. Most of my friends who I play with now tell me what the song title is and the key it’s in, but they never tell me what key I should be in they Know I know my stuff

When they call a song in G and I’m counting on my fingers G-A-B-C, I don’t mind, unless telling me “C” disrupts my counting.

When I’ve already pulled out 3 harps, not sure if I’ll play 1st, 2nd, or 3rd position, I don’t care.

And if I think the guitar player is a lame musician or just being arrogant, just two words. The second word I say is “You”. The first word depends on my mood.

Suggestions seldom happen.

I thank the guitar player. He used to be my music teacher and I’ve only played with his band a couple of times.
