I haven’t taken Luke’s courses, but I have learned a lot from this forum. Luke has several times helped me with things I got stuck on.
Edit….@Luke I probably should take a real harmonica course at some point, but as what I would define as a solid intermediate player, Could I even benefit from them? I think I just need more focused practice time.
I had a false start with harmonica playing. I won’t bother you with all the details, but I bought a blues harp (wooden comb); that was a mistake. I didn’t know anyone who played (still don’t personally know anyone) and did not have a clue how to play it. I hated that harmonica and I literally threw it away. I very nearly gave up on the whole idea, but I went back to the music store and bought a special 20. I searched the internet and chanced upon Luke’s video tutorial on the deep relaxed mouth position. Hallelujah, what a revelation! 9 minutes and 32 seconds later, I could play it. Single notes even. I still marvel at that. Thank You @Luke, it’s giving me a tremendous amount of joy, and I’m grateful to you. You have a gift for teaching.
So, @HarpinBobbyMcB, what have I learned from Luke? I learned how to play the harmonica. Also: you can never have too many hats, and you can never have too many candles.
I took the Beginner to Boss course and came away with a face full of humble pie. Luke is a gentle, supportive and expert teacher. After playing what I thought was a credible harp for 67 years, I learned several new techniques or the names for techniques I had been using. If you want focused practice time, playing along with Luke at 3 different speeds for each lesson gives you that. Treat yourself and take a course!
At first I thought I would hate the THEORY because, “I just wanted to play what I felt.” But, much to my surprise, and with a little help from @Luke , I have discovered am enthralled with making music and also learning how to write it out for others to understand.
So far, I have several very simply songs which I use primarily to practice different scales daily. I’m doing my best to interpret them in Harp Tabs and Musical Notation for the Harp and Piano.
I am happy to share here with all y’ all my progress, with all its permutations on the harp and piano for the first song UP AND DOWN at this post on my website
All the links should be live for the first song, if not, let me know. I’m filling in the rest as I go.
I’m interested in any feedback you have on the different formats i’ve used and also would love to know about how you practice harmonica and what you’ve learned from @Luke.
