Pretty new to the harp. I’ve done a lot of vocals in the past. I’ve always had attention issues (consistency), and well, I kind of gave up on it. (An instrument besides vox) I can demo out ideas for stems but, short story long….
on my grandmother’s d**thbed, came clean about my father’s father not being his father father.
My biological grandfather was a professional harp player in the late 40’s(?)-60’s(?) out of Philly. Hal Harmon. Haven’t found much but an interview and some photos but I’m really into tootin’ now
You got GAS - gear acquisition syndrome. Just wait until you discover the wonderful world(s) of microphones, amplifiers, effects pedals, minor tunings, other alternate tunings……… the list goes on! This tiny device can get expensive. Cheers Maka (also in Oz)
Hello,
My name is Ed. I am an 81 year old collector/player. I live in the Missouri Ozarks on the end of a ridge in trees with my bride of 53 years and three Irish setters. I used to play out on Brazilian and Cuban percussion. I no longer play out at all. I sit here in the trees with my dogs playing to the birds and squirrels. My goal is to learn to play some blues.
Welcome to the forum, Ed @stcin !! Do you already have a harmonica? If so, what brand is it? If you are still shopping/looking around for one, then you can get plenty of information on different models from the members here.
Keith here exited about adding the tin sandwich to my diet! Memories of my grand father playing the harmonica is my inspiration over 45 years ago. I do finger pick the six string and I am looking forward to adding a new instrument to my arsenal. I picked up 2 Hohners Rockets in the key of (C) and (G) and after all the research I have landed your beginner to boss criteria. Thanks for the opportunity on developing a skillful knowledge of fulfilling a new and exiting endeavor !!
Hello, my name is Alan Dean Hicks, but most people call me by my middle name, Dean or my nick name Deano. I’m 55years old.
I first picked up a harmonica when I was maybe 10 or 12 years old . I pittled with it off and on as a kid and a some when I was in the Army, but I never really persued learning the right way to play.
I was recently on vacation out in Utah exploring some of the parks–Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Capital Reef. I posted various pictures of the beautiful rock formations and canyons. An old army friend saw my posts and askwe me if I’d been blowing on that harp out there. It got me thinking, and I regretted that I couldn’t answer yes.
This spurned me to pick it up again, and here I am hoping to learn to play it the right way .
I’m Albert, from Spain. I’m 52 and I’ve just started with this instrument. Never thought that could It be such a big univers around the harmonica. But It caigut me!!
I’m a fan of the Stones since I was 15 and always loved the way that Brian Jones first and Mick Jagger later play harmonica for the Stones and how It fits in the Stones sound. I know that Jagger is not the best player, but he knows where to put every note and every rest.
The first time I could play the riff of Sweet Virginia was a nice moment for me! Still I’m smiling!!
This will be a fantastic winter learning to play harmonica and enjoying the days that the weather don’t let me go to ride my road bike!!
I’ve got a Special 20, and right now I’m looking for a hat. Seems that this is the secret to play decently!!!
@dhlh01 Welcome Dean! So glad your friend said that. Welcome to the forum. So happy you’re on the harp journey. Let’s GO!
@ortizvalor I think Mick is a GREAT player. I wish he played more often. His blues stuff at MSG in the late 60’s early 70’s is so epic. Don’t know he stopped playing on Midnight Rambler and the like. Congrats on Sweet Virginia. I’m impressed. Rock on!
I arrived in Spain on Thursday for a six week stay. I too really like the Rolling Stones and the way that Mick Jagger plays harmonica.
I am staying in the SE part of Spain, west of Demia in the city of Teulada. I have been in Spain 6 times before this trip, but I have not yet seen anyone playing harmonica. Is it not so popular here?
Enjoy your stay here. I live in Alcoi, near Teulada and Denia. You must have to go to taste “arròs a banda” for lunch in Denia, Altea, Oliva or any town near the coast. Tell me if you’ve like!!!
Blues and rock is extended almost in every country of the world, and instruments too. You can find incredible players in the last place of the world that you could expect. I’ve seen greats flamenco guitar players from Japan!! And the best blues is made in England (I think I’ve just started de WW3 hahahaha)….
You can check Antonio Serrano with his harmonica playing jazz, blues and flamenco-jazz.
Hi Luke. I am Simon. Essex UK. Just finished your lessons. I started with zero ability in may this year. I do a mix of playing along with your lessons and sometimes just go mess about on YouTube and try play along with whatever comes up. Your course is really good and learnt loads. Now I think it’s time to go back to the start of the course and do it all again to Hammer it all down and understand it better.
@ortizvalor Antonio Serrano is the GOAT. Got to meet him at SPAH a couple years ago. True virtuoso.
@revolutioncarriages Yes most people say the second or third time is better than the first. I applaud you for taking time on the fundamentals. Thanks for joining the forum. Rock on!
My name is David, and I’m an EastEnder, now living in North Hampshire, England, UK.
I’ve just bought myself a Höhner Special 20, with the intention of learning to play.
My musical interests vary wildly, from country to folk to Motown to jazz to soul to gospel to pop to classical ………………….. But I always come back to Elvis, in the end.
I’m a complete beginner, but I’d really love to surprise my grandchildren with some Christmas carols and songs this year, so I’d be really interested to know if you think that’s a realistic aim and, if so, which ones you’d recommend for someone, like me, starting from scratch.
Hi Luke my name is Steve and I have been on the boss course now for a month and I’m doing ok I think,I can put the single notes together now most attempts and doing ok on trill but needs lots of practice to get it up to speed.I can’t get video up on tabs section for visual of songs so I’m having difficulty putting the songs together on my harp what do you suggest man
Aloha, Doc here. I am a physician, a pediatric anesthesiologist here in Honolulu, Hawaii. I recently became a patient. In the beginning of the year I had severe back pain. I spent most of my time lying down during the work up, then surgery and recovery. All cured now. While on my back. I found a toy harmonica in the kids toy box. Then found Luke’s B2B course. I went down the rabbit hole and discovered the wide world of harmonica. Learning, practicing and playing helped enormously with all that I was going through. I love the connection to breath and breathing required. As an anesthesiologist I deal with ‘breath is life’ every day. I’m continuing to play. I carry a harmonica with me everywhere. I love it. Pleasure to meet all of you!
Thank you brother. I love your videos and methods. I’m pulling some minor bends drawing holes 3-6 but landing on them is tough. Use alot of air on the 2 draw…. Wish I could lip purse?!?
Welcome Doc. Lots of posts here about how the breathing part of harmonica helps everything from asthma to anxiety and lots in between. I also have my harmonica with me at all times like some sort of dummy [pacifier] I just need it with me. I can’t practice much at the moment because I’m travelling. People don’t mind you playing but practising something you can’t play is not appreciated I find. Look forward to hearing more about your journey into harmonica.
