Don here. A 66 year old beginner looking to develop technique and skills on this so I have something to do when I retire. Always loved music but never had time to really to learn an intrument. I’m learning guitar to and between the two will also hope to learn music theory. Thanks for letting me join!
Welcome @dstellajr59, I assume you were a 59 baby, I’m 1960. Also never had the time or inclination and only started playing when I retired a couple of years ago. I hope you come to love it.
A fine age.
I think there’s a lot to be said for learning more than one instrument. They may be very different but the things you learn on one give you new angles on the other. It’s only a few years since I ‘discovered’ that I wasn’t the tone deaf no hoper my teachers said I was, so I’ve been making up time ever since. I’ve found I’d much rather be moderately competent on several instruments than specialise in one. I only play for my own entertainment, so as long as I’m having fun that’s fine, and being able to mess around musically on a variety of instruments works for me. YMMV.
Welcome to the forum.
I agree with learning multiple instruments. I have worked on Guitar, Clarinet, Violin (not successfully), Dulcimer, Piano, and finally have settled on the harmonica. I would enjoy playing multiple instruments but certain physical limitations make that difficult, so harmonica is it for me.
Hi I’m Wayne from Doncaster England. I found my dad’s old Harmonica in his drawer not that he could play it, but he always wanted to learn. So i thought why not i always liked the sound of them and would love to just be able to pull it out of my pocket and play some tunes, so i bought a Lee Oskar in C. Joined up and here we go now it’s the start of my journey, and i can’t wait to get going and get to know some of you all.
I miss my old Echo! It is great for old ballads, campfire tunes and any folk tunes in first position. It plays like my old Mississippi Harmonica Company tremolo harp. Takes a lot of wind to play these but the richness and natural vibrato is awesome in the right songs. I hope you can restore it. How fun.
Just have fun with it, @kapawayna
Just have fun.
I might also advise to keep it on your person at all times.
Good idea I can practice whenever I get the chance then.
Still available! My wife fondly remembered the Echo that she’d bought on a school trip to Germany back in the 6O’s. We got one for her, but whilst she can still play it, it’s too rough on her lips now, so the harp has joined my collection of diatonics. I don’t play it much, but it’s that tremelo sound is great when I do. ![]()
I’m laughing about the sore lips. I used to call mine the cheese grater. I stopped playing mine other than short special effect stints for the same reason.
Ok here is my harmonica collection, some of which I plan to sell off once I finish restoration on them. The Chinese harps I plan to sell on my soon to be created harmonica site.

@dstellajr59 Welcome to the forum! Are you taking Beginner to Boss? If so check out Module 9 Music Theory module!! Rock on! ![]()
@kkapawayna Welcome Wayne. So glad to have you here.
@sirworkalot Love the username, lol! Thanks for joining the forum.
I’m already loving it! Working on guitar at the same time. Fortunately music theory is a transferable skill!
I have been using beginner to boss, and it’s great! Just need to have patience! Single notes are coming along well, and I started using bending tool and it helps but haven’t been able to get passed the 1 and 2 hole bend. Patience padewan!
Hi Luke,
My name is Ian and I have just started to learn the blues harp. I am 63 and abide in the UK. I am profoundly deaf but have been playing blues guitar, both electric and acoustic in various bands over the last 40 years. I play by feel. I am also building a recording studio so I can record my first blues album. I will play all instruments but I can not sing sadly.
The only problem I have so far is I can not bend notes, not sure if this is down to technique or due to my missing teeth. They all fell out when I underwent radiation treatment for cancer five years ago, now clear happy to say..
Love your YouTube lessons, will sign up for your online course soon.
Hey Luke!
I pretty much told my life story over in the lounge, so this will be brief. Been playing for 50 or so years. Self taught, blues, rock, some first position melodies. Got into blow bends in the last 3 or so years. I Also play chromatics and a double bass from EastTop. It is really exciting to find such an extensive online community for Harping! I went to the Harmonica Experience in Clarksdale last September and learned so much that I’m going back in May of this year. This forum will be a much shorter drive (I’m in Virginia). I’m looking forward to digging in to all of your tutorials!
Finally, there seems to be a real boom in interest for the Harp these days. Some new-to-me artists that I’m listening to are Filip Jers, a Swede and Jason Ricci, a harmonica animal.
Cheers!
@Luffy welcome to the forum! Bending takes time. You can do it with out teeth. You’ll get it!
@ThomasH welcome to the forum! So glad to have you here. Thanks for coming and sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Rock on! ![]()
Hi all,
65 year old retired Paramedic who plays ukulele in a large group. I picked up a blues harp many years ago pre internet and never followed it through. I’m just looking to entertain myself at home for the time being and hopefully introduce it into the uke group if I can become semi decent in time. I hope you’re all keeping well and enjoying your journey. Cheers from Scotland ![]()
@Pedro_61 Welcome you will find it a great place to get help here. I’m just starting out myself. Luke’s lessons on YouTube are great but if you do want more in depth his course is fantastic I’m going through that at the moment you have 3 different speeds you can do it or mix it up. But it’s worth checking out in my opinion. Dam I sound like one of those adverts on itv after 12 o’clock I didn’t mean to lol.
I’ve been thinking of learning harmonica for years. I came across Luke’s beginner video on youtube and was very impressed. I’m an intermediate level guitar player, and hope to add the harp!
