@Heath_Watts - great taste you’ve got! Best of luck with your new endeavor! Welcome to the forum. @Boaz_Kim_Music is around your area. He might have some students he could refer you to jam with?
@kylebartho Congratulations on your progress Kyle! Glad you’re digging the course.
@BluesPete Love it my man. Welcome to the forum. Hope it’s helpful for ya! Try searching for topics using the magnifying glass. It’s fun!
@wacman Welcome Wally! Yeah the harmonica is the easiest schlep of any instrument for sure. Welcome to the forum. Thanks for joining us. Rock on!
Hi. I am 64. I found this Hohner Blues International ‘C’ diatonic harmonica that I had for years and never played it. Still in the box. Forgot that I even had it. I decided to give this thing a whirl.
Luke, I love your videos and the way you instruct. I a connect with you more than many others. In two weeks I have learned so much. The biggest thing that I learned is taking baby steps
When I get done a quick lesson on working on breath control and tone, I gently tap the harp, holes down against a towel to get any excess moisture out. Then I let it air dry for hours.
I ordered a Hohner 20 that is coming in today.
A question. Even on the forum, it gets confusing on how to clean plastic comb Harps. And forget looking it up on the Internet. So many different ways that is suggested
How often should I take these apart to thoroughly clean them? And I want to make sure that I do this the correct way.
There is no “best” way to clean your harp, but (as you have noticed) many very good ones – at least here in the collection of methods that are available within this forum.
How often? Same answer. It is never too often, but can easily become too seldom.
So check out the various suggestions that you can find here and do whatever one(s) seems to you to be practical.
What is important is to play with a clean, fresh mouth (no sticky drinks!) and do not let others play your harp.
Hi I’m Rick, I’ve been trying to play harmonica for years but never took any lessons before. I’m excited to finally learn the right way to play! I’m 67 years old so i’m hoping that an old dog can in fact learn new tricks.
I should’ve made an introduction back when I first joined the forum back in 2019, but there are always new faces coming in every day. So I’ll do one.
Hi everybody, my name is Amy (they/them). I’m a gigging harmonica player and indie music producer from Ohio. I started playing back in late 2018 at the age of 16. I loved the harmonica as a kid, as I grew up listening to a lot of the blues-influenced country players of the 80s, 90s, and 00s.
My favorite harmonica player and biggest influence on my style is Terry McMillan. I really liked how he played with so much raw emotion and I wanted to get that lonesome sound he had. “Ain’t Goin’ Down (Til the Sun Comes Up)” by Garth Brooks is an example of Terry’s harmonica playing at its best as he would often wail on the harp at max intensity. That alongside his powerhouse tone, deep throat vibrato, and his signature growls are what made him stand out to me as an amazing harmonica player.
I currently am playing harmonica in a cover band and also working on my own music. I really like the fusion of Sega Genesis-style chiptune music and roots genres like blues and country, so I might make a few songs in that approach.
Hey Everyone! My name is Joe Humann. I’m new to this site but not new to playing harp…my major influence is Paul Butterfield, James Cotton and Charlie Musselwhite…I play in the Brooklyn/Woodstock NY-based band called American Nomads.
@Todd_M ask 20 players and get 20 different answers. Personally, I run it under hot tap water in both directions (you can even use a TINY bit of dish soap if you want - just rinse it REALLY well.)
Then tap it against your palm and blow/draw all the water out. Dry with a clean soft cloth or towel, and leave out of the box for a couple hours to ensure that it dries completely.
I probably don’t do it often enough. (Usually not until I’m unhappy with something about playing it, lol.) Welcome to the forum. So happy to have you here. And glad to hear the vids are resonating. Rock on!
@ricksl353 Welcome to the forum! Yes, many here can attest that old dogs actually CAN learn new tricks. You got this!
@KeroroRinChou thanks for the introduction Amy. I just saw your post that the one sound clips were Terry, but still your playing on your chiptune song sounds AMAZING my friend!!! Big congrats on all your progress, and thank you for your contributions here. We appreciate you!
@jhumann Thanks so much for joining us. Really happy to have you here. Got any vids or music links you can share with us of American Nomads?
Hi all, I’m Griff from the UK. Fell in love with the sound of the harmonica when I listened to Supertramp and Rick Davis Playing Take the Long Way Home. So, many years later I’m delving in to the mysteries of the harmonica and just loving every second I spend learning. Unfortunately. I don’t think my wife or Dog are so keen with my new passion. Pleased to meet you.
Hi, my name is Sil and having a great time going through the Beginner Course. Been here for a week and somehow accumulated 7 harmonicas lol. My grandfather played the harmonica and got the desire to learn. Thanks for the solid guidance Luke.
Hey Luke…thanks so much for the welcome! Here is a link to American Nomads website.
I had the privilege to connect with Lee Oskar himself and he was so generous to send me a package of his harmonicas and even allowed me to use his logo on our site as a form of sponsorship…I only play his harps after years of Hohner Special 20’s like John Popper often played with…I abandoned the Hohner line of harmonicas many years ago… this forum is brilliant and I’m grateful to be a part of this community.
Hey folks. I’m a Prairie boy from Winnipeg that now lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Being from Winnipeg…I must have some music inside these bones! I’m looking to play for fun. Also looking to play for a way to keep my feet on the ground when sometimes things seem crazy out there. - I think bending my Oscar will keep me be more present!
Thus far I’m loving my harp and Luke’s style. Thanks! I figure to really ‘get it’ I should probably come to Hawaii:)
@griffin270 Welcome to the forum Griff from the UK! Yeah, that’s a classic for sure! I bet wife will come around! (Not sure about the dog tho. )
@Sil 'Atta boy! You’ve got G.A.S. (Gear acquisition syndrome.) Welcome to the club! Way to honor grandpa. Keep up the great work!
@jhumann Band sounds great man! Thanks for sharing the link. Yeah, Lee is just the best. He’s the real deal!!
@stephendoerksen Hey Steve I hear ya my brother, it’s easy to get the blues and the harmonica is a GREAT way to let 'em out. Glad you’re enjoying the course, and so glad that you’ve joined us in the forum. Rock on!
Just discovered this website and can’t believe I already jammed to a sample blues song w Luke. I’ve hacked at the harmonica a bit here & there thru the years, and this was the first time I felt relaxed & connected(!) So I signed up for the free sample lessons…
I’m from St. Louis, but living part time in the Netherlands where I just picked up a Fender Blues Deluxe 3-pack from a tiny music shop in Edam.
Didn’t think I was old until I couldn’t figure out how to post without replying. Anyway, signed up recently after a month of youtube videos. You break down the lessons very well. Enjoying it so far!
