The Case for Harmonica Cases

For many years a toiletries bag took care of my harps and a JT-30. Harps were laid out on top of the amp at a gig because you couldn’t find them easily in the bag.

Today there seem to be a lot of soul-less cases made from aluminum, plastic/poly-something, ballistic materials; fur-lined briefcases; and machine stitched canvas. So, seeing these 16-harp leather cases (on Etsy), I thought they were a nice organic choice.

I had a harp player friend in Michigan, Hal Iwan, who started making cases and offered to make one for me. The gun in the photo is a prop. No crocodiles we’re injured in the manufacturing.

A friend bought me a smaller case (long, low lunch box) from a little novelty goods store in Capitola. It only holds 8 harps. I don’t think this was how Leonardo da Vinci expected his mural would be used.

I like that leather Harp case.
I was thinking of getting a tool box to store, my mic and audio interface in.

I live two miles from Sweetwater, do you still recommend this case?

@luebkekris0 Yeah the Seydel case is SUPER durable and holds a lot of harps. It’s a great case.

I also like the Hohner Flexcase XL. (I have a lot of harmonicas! lol.)

More here:

I love this solution. Can I ask you where you got the inserts that hold all the harmonicas perfectly? Or did you make that!?

Welcome to the forum @OB3! I’m just gonna ping @Maka here to make sure he sees your post. Rock on! :sunglasses:

Luke and OB3 - the inserts are extremely complex (!), requiring cardboard, scissors, ruler, glue etc and all covered up with black spray paint. A real challenge for a grade 5 student, but only took me a few hours. And it is tailored to fit precisely in the pedal case. And it has lasted years.

I recently purchased this from ebay CASEMATIX Waterproof Harmonica Case fits 40 Harmonicas by Hohner, Fender & More I really like it and think it was a reasonable price. It fits all my harmonicas and then some. I might set it up to hold a mic as well, not sure it I want to change the configuration tho.

Whatever type of case, during a gig I want my harps close so they’re easy to reach for the next song/key. Might be something to consider. Harmonica belts, bandoleros, or harp vests just aren’t for me.

One day when I’m more experienced I plan to use the Hohner Flexcase™ I got as a prize for a challenge - it’s real comfy.

As of right now, I found that for carrying around 1 or several harps for practice, the default cases that the harmonicas come in (either the mouse-coffin ones or the cloth ones) actually pretty useful and prevent the harps from scratching against each other or getting dust/tiny bits of debris that is found inside bags/pockets, so I actually have a new appreciation for them now

Hey @Trapper good to see you again buddy! Yeah, me too. I have a shelf on my mic stand they go on. And a cup holder on my mic stand that might bullet mic goes in!

As for me, right now an old Samsonite Camera Case is working pretty well.

Gives me a place for all my harps, which I rotate depending on the day.

This place up front keeps my tow prettiest harps free from banging around.

The rest of the kids get thrown in here. Though the outside of the cases gets banged up a bit, doesn’t effect their playing, so far.

My Baby Fat does have a dent here

But I think it’s due pressure from my fingers while playing, and not from getting banged around :joy:

Here’s the kids all together for a picture.

I forgot Oops :see_no_evil:,

who I rotate in on Fridays with my 008k and my Baby Fat, on what I like to call musically challenged day, since they each have unique challenges :joy:

Anyone else use camera cases? :thought_balloon:

@lasersolutionswi You know they make M, L, and XL, right? I’ve got the XL (and still ran out of room!) Think I need another one.

Just thought I’d post 4 honest photos of what my studio looks like as I’m writing this :see_no_evil:

You can see why my wife gives me stink eye when I say, “I’m missing a harmonica. You haven’t seen one anywhere have you?”

@yuriythebest sure thing!

N + Cm is how Lee Oskar notates Cm Natural Minor on comb.
Bb + CT is Country Tuned
B + NM - is B Natural Minor (I put stickers on my LO cuz my eyes are getting too old to see anything in clubs anymore, lol.)
F+ PR - is Parrott-Tuned (-7 tuned down a half-step.)

@Hogie.Harmonica you’ve pique my curiosity! Can’t wait to see it. And I hope you have a BLAST at SPAH!! (So bummed I can’t be there this year, but it was definitely the right call for my health / fam / biz this year.) I look forward to hopefully connecting with you at the next one in 2026!

Hi all… Love the discussions on the forum. I saw this on Amazon.ca. It looks a lot like the Seydel case that Luke posted. For 110.00 Canadian ( about 80.00 USD). Hardshell, waterproof, holes for padlocks, forty slots for harps and the foam can be cut with scissors for customization. hmmm- it was originally designed for handgun magazines but now as a harmonica

I know there will be those out there who laugh. That’s perfectly ok. The thing is I only play by myself and when I’m away on my frequent little travels this is the perfect case for me.
I bought it in Kyoto near geisha street. In a craft shop supposedly selling objects made by geishas to supplement their declining popularity and associated income.
It reminds me of the holiday and holds enough of my favourites and my little BT speaker. It is actually for make up etc but the little side pockets hold up the harmonics perfectly.
