What song are you working on?

I’m not too familiar with the song but get the general rhythm.

@yuriythebest , your comments remind me of one time when someone watched one of my early videos and commented about how hard I seemed to be working. He plays the piano and couldn’t understand why I had to put so much effort into what I was doing.

The short answer is, because I wasn’t doing it right!

If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years, if something sounds wrong, it isn’t the kind of harmonica we are playing or the key, rather our technique. Once we can polish our technique, particularly with playing clean, solid single notes, then we can start to sound halfway decent.

As for angling the harmonica up or down, it can make a difference, particularly in restricting airflow to get bends. But even though it works, it is not as reliable, nor does it sound as good as a nice deep bend coming from deep down in your throat.

For me the single biggest issue is what @Luke preaches from the beginning:

Deep relaxed mouth position and semi-pucker technique pushes harmonica back

Why Your Single Notes Sound Squeaky and Weak

As for your note @brot1987

I can suggest you learn this phrase:

HEY GOOGLE (or Alexa, or Siri, or whoever your personal assistant happens to be)

In what key is the song XYZ by ABC.

The results are usually pretty good but don’t always match each other. This is what a search for Open Road came up with on Tunebat:

Key & BPM for Open Road by Bryan Adams | Tunebat

Another site which has great information, not only on the key of the song, but also the actual notes played, is www.Hooktheory.com. An app I have on my phone is called Auto-Key, which also does a pretty good job at telling you the key.

I listened to the song but am not very familiar with it, not sure what notes are played on the solo, but sounds cool. I’d start with the major scale on a B harmonica, and see which ones sound best, and let 'er rip!!

Rock on!
