Here’s a little improv that I posted yesterday on my Youtube channel. I really loved how it turned out. A lot of people online say to me that I have a bluesy style on the harmonica. They’re right in a sense because I do play with my heart on my sleeve a lot, especially when I play slow blues where I can just naturally feel the groove and express myself through the instrument. I really like to think of my approach as “wailing with technique”, meaning that I put in 110% of my emotions into my licks but I still consider things like technique and how the notes I’m playing fit into each chord.

Here’s a little practice I did today with my Hohner Marine Band in A. I usually don’t play a lot of wooden combed harmonicas, mainly for sensory reasons, but I love the tone of this harp and how well it plays. This is me playing a bluesy shuffle in my own style.

Sounds jolly and fun. Something to try and avoid is playing constant draw blow draw blow. Try a little more draw draw draw. Just to vary the vibe. Your musicality is definitely there.

I can hear a pretty good tone, although a little bit brittle sounding. I also hear a little bit of vibrato starting to show up. Good job on it!

I completed my “One Track Mind” remix. It might’ve taken a scrapped MIDI file and a OS change from Windows to Linux, but I finally finished it! I feel so proud of myself for actually being able to finish something I’m passionate about.

I also recently did a cover of “Juke”, just to piss off the harmonica purists who think that I need to change who I am in order to fit their extremely narrow definition of a “real blues harmonica player”. I don’t need to fit in with everybody else. Just give me a harmonica and some wiggle room for creativity, then I’ll blow everybody’s minds.
